Day 10 - San Martin to Bariloce 290 Km

Cold this morning at 10C. OK, that´s not really cold, but we´ve got used to much hotter. It´s the middle of summer at the latitude equivilent of Madrid. So, I expect warm, at least.

Today, we see lakes and rivers. Not surprising since we´re in the Argentinian lake district. We leave San Martin and hit the dirt roads around Lagos Hermosa, Villarino, Falkner and Traful. Lovely and pretty but lots of traffic. Full size tourist coaches blastin along dirt roads in the forest around the lakes. Little hatchbacks loaded with people and luggage happily navigating dirt tracks a Chelsea tractor (driver) would run a mile from.

Eventually, we find a nice lunch spot and find the Argentine equivalent of Vin de Table. Good enough for lunch and only $6 (US$2 or a quid) for the bottle. I think we´ve finally met the challenge for the one peso (17p) glass of wine.

More lakes, more wind, more threatening cloud and then a spectacular valley full of volcanic bits.

Then back on tarmac roads, more traffic and a blast into the tourist resort of Bariloche. Nice hotel. That´s not difficult since this place is wall-to-wall hotels - a serious tourist town. There´s the lake with various watersports, a nearby ski resort, hiking in the hills, cycling. But most of all, lots and lots of shops full of tourist tat.
